In the province of Lugo in the municipality of the same name we find the monastery of Samos. It is the oldest inhabited monastery in Spain and was founded in the 6th century, belonging to the Benedictine order.

King Alfonso II lived in this monastery throughout his childhood, who according to tradition is considered the first pilgrim. During his reign, the remains of the Apostle Santiago were discovered and he decided to set out on the road to Galicia to see it with his own eyes. That is why he was attributed in the twentieth century with the creation of the primitive road that starts from Oviedo.

More and more pilgrims decide to take the variant of the path that passes through Samos since it offers majestic views along the banks of the Oribio, crossing impressive oak and chestnut forests.

Despite the remarkable relationship between Samos and the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, we must not forget other facts of its rich history, since it is one of the largest and oldest monastic foundations in Galicia.

This getaway will allow us to discover vestiges of the past in a haven of peace and tranquility.

Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival at the accommodation in Samos

Upon arrival at the accommodation we will check-in and we will get ready to discover Galician culture and gastronomy. We will take this day as free time to get to know Samos. Among other things we will find the chapel of San Salvador, a small Mozarabic chapel from the end of the 9th century or its thousand-year-old cypress, one of the 50 most notable trees in Spain. Also the river walk to Pontenova at the exit of Samos that runs right next to the Oribio river. On its shore there is a monument to the pilgrim.

Once our tour is finished, we will relax in the accommodation to have strength and be well rested for the next day with more movement.

Day 2. Visit the Monastery, Gastronomic tasting in Sarria, Free afternoon

After breakfast at our accommodation, we will visit the Monastery of Samos. The visit to the Monastery does not admit reservations, so you must pay it upon arrival in cash. We will observe its beautiful baroque abbey church, its large cloister and its small cloister with a large Baroque fountain of the Nereidas.

Once the visit is over, we will go to Sarria to taste the gastronomy of the area. We will enjoy an essential menu to savor the essence of the region. Veal is the queen of the kitchen thanks to the extensive meadows that cover much of the Lugo region. In the selected menu, they have also wanted to dedicate a small space to the pig, and more specifically to the Celtic Pig, an unknown variety of this animal, a classic of the peninsula, which has a unique variant in Lugo.

Once our gastronomic experience is finished and well rested, we will have the afternoon free to spend the afternoon in this mythical city. The Jacobean town of Sarria is well known for being the city where many begin their experience as pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. We recommend accessing the historic area of the town through the Escaleira da Fonte or the Main Staircase. From here it is already possible to see the Church of Santa Mariña with its pyramid-shaped tower. We can finish our walk from the Miradoiro do Cárcere and say goodbye to the beautiful views of the town and the Vega de Sarria.

If you want to make the most of your visit in Sarria, it is possible to add the extra option of dinner in the same selected place.

Day 3. Breakfast, end of services

This is the last day of our getaway. We will get up after enjoying the hotel's comforts and have a leisurely breakfast. We will check-out but depending on the time we have, we can still take advantage of the morning by discovering the surroundings such as the Lóuzara Valley, of great natural value.

Then we will end our getaway.

We wish you a safe trip back home hoping that you have enjoyed these days in Galicia.

Have a safe journey!
